DYNAMICS | | | |
| Surprise Symphony – 2nd movement: Haydn - (Quiet opening with sudden loud chord) | | (Click on ‘Hear the Music’) | http://www.classicsforkids.com |
| Zadok the Priest - Handel. Listen as the tension builds and the introduction becomes louder. This gives a false sense that the singing might begin at around 30 seconds and 60 seconds and then at 1m 26s the choir comes in forte (loud). | wma

| Death March from Götterdämmerung - Wagner. Wagner builds the tension by using repetition but with subtle - for instance the number of drum (timps) beats. Suspense in music is often achieved (as here) with quiet separate sounds. Each of the 3 chords in the build up before the loud brass chords enter (c. 1.5 minutes into extract) gets louder. Then there are surges in the dynamics. This extract is often used in film music. | m3u

| Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4 (Andante) Ask the children to listen to the interplay between the orchestra (which starts loud and assertive) and the piano - quiet and ....what? Is the piano pacifying the orchestra? Notice how as the music continues the orchestra becomes quieter. What do the children think the music is about? Is this a conversation, an argument? | |
